Alan S. Herford, DDS, MD, FACS
Dr. Herford is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Loma Linda University. He is also an Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery, School of Medicine, Loma Linda University Medical Center. Dr. Herford received his DDS degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry and went on to complete his training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He also earned his MD from the University of Texas at Dallas Southwestern Medical School. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Herford serves on numerous committees and Boards. He currently serves on the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS).

Presentation title: What’s New in Oral Surgery? A Look at How Technology Has Improved Patient Care
Course description: This course will focus on recent advances in facial surgery. These advances have led to more predictable surgical options for patients with improved patient care as a result. We will look at how growth factors are now being used clinically to regenerate missing tissue. We will also discuss how virtual surgical planning has improved surgical accuracy and benefited patients. Finally we will give an update on facial trauma and how technology and new biomaterials have improved surgical care.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this course participants should be able to:
1. Discuss surgical options, including growth factors, for patients who are missing teeth
2. Understand how improvements in technology has allowed for advances such as virtual surgical planning for patients with a variety of defects/deformities
3. Be familiar with treatment options for patients undergoing facial trauma
4. Discuss ways to improve implant success.
5. Discuss the importance of collaborating with other dental provider to obtain superior results.
6. Be familiar with various grafting materials that may benefit patients.
