When I was assigned the job of leading the Disaster Response ministry here in the Southern Union the first thing that was explained to me was the need to have a training event planned for the Southern Union. You may not realize it but certification to work in the disaster response arena comes with an expiration date.

The Southern Union has gathered together a group of highly trained individuals to provide this training for you. Training does not occur every year, or even every other year, so I want to stress the importance of either getting your certification or renewing your certification at this time.

In addition to disaster response training we will also be offering an additional module in Crisis Care. Our trainer is Martin Feldbush. Crisis Care comes with a specialty certification through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Inc. (ICISF). In the world of crisis care this is a very prestigious offering. The intervention portion of Crisis Care trains you to be a volunteer to provide emotional and spiritual care for traumatized survivors of disasters. This module is open to anyone, but may be especially useful to pastors. ACS leaders may want to get this module rather than the Disaster Response modules.

Our space is very limited and you could be turned away. Register today before someone else gets your spot.

Disaster Response Training Modules

Introduction to Disaster Response (Certification Requires 3 Hours)
This course is the entry level module for disaster response. Learn how you, your family and church can survive a disaster. This is the foundation class needed for all other DR modules.

DONOP: Donations Operations (Certification Requires 6-8 Hours)
The purpose of this course is to give the participants basic training in donated good operations which is the major function of ACS DR.

Volunteer Management (Certification Requires 4 hours)
During the course of this class learn how to recruit, supervise and evaluate volunteers during a disaster response operation. Learn how to manage your volunteers under adverse conditions and understand the consequences of improper management.

Leadership (Certification requires 4 hours)
This compacted class is designed to equip pastors, church administration and lay-leadership with strategies and professional skills to successfully lead. It will focus on three major learning outcomes; leadership skills, improvement of knowledge, and changes in attitude.

WM: Warehouse Management (Certification Requires 12 Hours)
This course is a specialized hands-on training for potential warehouse managers that teaches how to select an appropriate building, layout warehouse floor plans, set-up the warehouse and various functions required to manage the operation. Note: Certain FEMA courses are required before full certification is granted.

FKLT: Forklift Safety Certification (Certification Requires 2 Hours)
In this module, instruction will be given on why forklift safety procedures are necessary and what can happen when forklift operators become distracted. Other topics discussed include pre-operation, operation, load handling, fuel and battery maintenance and general safety rules for specialized units.

Crisis Care Module:

Crisis Intervention Training (Certification Requires 13-14 Hours)
Crisis Intervention training is presented in intensive 13-14 hour courses. Four courses are offered by Adventist Community Services: Individual Crisis Intervention, Group Crisis Intervention and Pastoral Crisis Intervention I and II. In addition, serious students may take other courses and earn specialty certificates by attending trainings offered at International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Inc. (ICISF) conferences as listed on the ICISF website (www.ICISF.org). Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries, in collaboration with ACS, offers a Disaster Response Chaplaincy Credential for pastors who have taken all the required training and meet the other qualifications. ACS also offers the basic psychological first aid training in a six hour course especially for members who volunteer at local church Community Services Centers.

What is the Crisis Intervention Ministry?
Adventist Community Services’ Crisis Intervention Ministry trains and deploys volunteers to provide emotional and spiritual care for traumatized survivors of disasters and other critical incidents. Because a disaster or other critical incident may have the potential to interfere with an individual’s daily or normal functions, it is helpful to have the assistance of a crisis interventionist who has been trained to use the principles of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). Crisis intervention is a temporary, but active and supportive entry into the life of individuals or groups during a period of extreme stress. Its goals are to mitigate the impact of the event, facilitate recovery processes in people who are having normal reactions to abnormal events and restoration to adaptive function. Crisis intervention in its basic form is psychological first aid and is not counseling or psychotherapy.

Who may become Crisis Interventionists?
Crisis Interventionist are multi-disciplinary professionals including pastors, educators, nurses and other medical personnel, social workers, mental health workers, counselors, law enforcement officers, fire and rescue personnel, victim’s advocates, and other professional volunteers who are trained in the principles of Critical Incident Stress Management. Prior mental health training or experience is especially advantageous.
