Hurricane Ike

Adventist Community ServicesKeene, TX - Hurricane Ike wore itself out beating up Texas. Larger than Katrina, Ike's shadow covered 85% of the Gulf of Mexico and was roughly the size of Texas. Ike came in as a Category 2, but with a storm surge of a Category 4 and is the largest hurricane to strike Texas in 50 years. The largest search and rescue effort in the history of Texas is now under way.

Today 4 million people in the Houston area are without power, and flooding spans for miles. Louisiana was also strongly affected by Ike, in some of the same area Gustav hit less than two weeks ago!

As residents who chose to disobey the evacuation orders are being rescued from roof tops and plucked from flood waters, they are then being transported by bus to San Antonio. They will be sheltered there until they can return home. The State of Texas has requested that Texas Adventist Community Services bring their Mobile Distribution Unit filled with clothing outfits to San Antonio on Sunday to help with the evacuation effort. As evacuees arrive, still in their flood soaked clothing, they can be offered a
clean, dry outfit of clothing and a personal care kit so they can take a shower and get cleaned up.

As affected areas reopen and residents can begin returning to their homes, Adventist Community Services plans to open distribution sites in several churches. Working in partnership with Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) and Feed The Children, these distribution sites will serve survivors emergency supplies to help them in returning to a normal life. Supplies such as boxes of food, cleaning supplies, personal care kits, blankets, and other essential items will be offered to affected residents.

Arkansas-Louisiana Adventist Community Services plans to continue serving hurricane survivors from the Southern Louisiana Convention Center in Hammond, LA. Plans are to use mobile distribution to get the emergency supplies out to those affected by Hurricane Gustav and now Hurricane Ike. Cleaning supplies and blankets will be offered to those affected by these storms.

Hundreds of ACS Volunteers will be working in their communities to make a difference.  You can help by making a donation today.
